And if that's true, how are you gaining anything by checking the turn and getting it in on the river?

My thinking at the time, which was probably wrong was that shoving the river would look bluffier after checking the turn, as he had less than a pot sized bet, and would be more likely to call with 9's and pocket pairs.

I can see why you would think that.

The problem is that the river changes the board. About half of the river cards are going to make it unlikely he calls with a 9. If the spade comes and he doesn't have the flush, then your action is completely shut down, getting no more value. If the spade comes and he does have the flush, you're getting stacked.
