Default Does This Tell Me Something About Implied Odds

Was 4 tabling $4NL 6 max today and got 67s in the small blind. No raise, I complete, bb checks. Flop gives me a double gutter, 12 cents is bet, I call. Turn gives me the low end of the straight, I fire pot size bet as there is a flush draw now. Villain goes all in for $11 and I had $11 in my stack as well. I tank then call knowing the ONLY thing that beats me is QJ. He has top pair and an open ender I dodge a disaster on the river and the $21.25 pot is mine. My biggest pot I have seen at $4NL never mind actually won.

Now all this time when it comes to suited connectors I have limped if there are enough limpers before me. I do not cold call preflop raises with suited connectors and I do not open limp with them nor do I call if there is only one limper before me. But have I been wrong?

I am still learning NL cash games but is what happened today a clear view of just what implied odds are in NL cash games. The profit in the hand was over $10 so because of implied odds should I be calling the 3x the bb preflop raise with these things simply because of implied odds? Obviously today I have seen they can be huge. Ignoring that me and Villain both had largish stacks even a regular $4 stack could be won by hitting something big with a suited connector.

So what do you more experienced players think. Was this just a fluke or over the LONG TERM are implied odds with suited connectors just something that are too large to ignore? Thoughts please.

This all sounds like you're thinking critically about poker, which is good.

You seem to be asking, "What is the right way to play SC's?"

I made a lengthy and naive thread about said topic when I first started posting on FTR. It was largely a waste of time. The conclusion:

There is no single answer. Sorry. There is no "right" way to play poker. Every decision is based on your assumptions about what Villains can do and what they are doing.

Think about what their bets/checks/raises/folds mean about their range.

Think about how deep their stack is pre-flop before you consider playing a hand that needs implied odds to win.

Think about how likely you are to be in a HU pot. Multi-way pots are a good way to increase implied odds with drawing hands.

    +1 to MMM remarks.

Just as an example, in your particular hand, you could have played it completely differently depending on who your opponent was, the board texture, etc.

You can raise preflop against a villain who folds a lot.
You can limp preflop against a passive player who calls too much.
You can fold preflop against an aggro monkey who is going to systematically raise your limps or reraise your raise.

You can bet your draw on the flop against a tight opponent.
You can check/call your draw as you did.
You can check/fold your draw if his bet is too big or if the flop is monochrome.

Your turn donk pot sized bet may be good or not, depending on the range of your opponent and his tendencies. Betting "because there is a flush draw on the board" is probably not a good reason enough to bet in itself. It is worth considering all the factors and possible actions. Check/raise, check call may also be viable options.

Call his shove may be good or not, for example if your opponent is a rock who only shoves the nuts.

So the answer is... it depends.

That is also why when you post hands you should post all the information: villain stats or tendencies, your table image, which exactly you hold, which cards are on the board, what is the range of your opponent, etc
