what do i do i always have trouble with this

As always in Poker, I don't believe there is a straight answer to this it really does depend.
You need to take into account how the betting went preflop. Consider what kinds of hands would your opponents call a raise with (assuming you raised). Consider your position on the table. If you are first to act then I believe you need to take a stab at the pot and see what happens. If you get action then you need to take into account all that has happend so far and make a decision based on all the info.

I agree with Zilch, you have to be the agressor. Fire out a good sized post flop bet, if someone limps in front of you - reraise. You have to know where you stand before you get too involved with the pot. If someone has the K with a decent kicker they will let you know. If they have the K with a crappy kicker, chances are they will fold to a raise or a reraise. If that were an A instead of a K, you have to be much more cautious....many people are more likely to play A-Xs hoping to flop 2 pair or a flush draw.

DavSimon is correct and the preflop should have given you a good clue.

If you are a tight player and raise 2x,3x BB most will drop. Whoever
calls you probably has a premium hand AA,KK,AK,AQ unless they
are a "jackal" who may like A-rag suited or KQ, or any pair.

A strong post flop bet will knock out the A-rag or any pair. A raise is a good indicator that you may want to swallow hard and muck the hand.

Excellent point made here. The A is the overcard to fear the most (especially in a multi-way pot and/or when out of position) because of how many "any ace" or "any suited ace" players there are out there. Many fish will call pre-flop raises with ace-junk or ace-junk suited.
