Lucky or good? Turning point hand.
So I won a nice tourney this weekend in Vegas, 8 table MTT. This hand was the turning point for me. The question is, did villian play it badly? I don't think so -- this was just unlucky for him:
Blinds and antes are big, my M is about 11. The button is an older guy, a regular, and has been playing tight and in position. He has seen me make one mistake with AQ, but I got lucky, so my image is a little donkish. Button has me slightly outchipped, his M is 12.
Hero is UTG with 99, 9 handed. Table is extra tight as we are close to the money. I raise to 3BB, typical for this table and no one has been playing back without a real hand. Folds around, button calls, blinds fold.
Flop: A 9 7
Obviously a dream situation for me. I check/raise all in and effectively stack the guy. (He bet 3BB on the flop, insta-called my shove) I did Hollywood it up before shoving, so he didn't think I was as strong as I was: maybe he was hoping I had JJ or something.
After big hands like this, I like to think about what I would have done in his position. Was his call with AT ok? I think it was bad calling that after an UTG raiser. On the other hand, AQ and AK are valid calls, and I don't think I could have gotten away from TPTK on that flop. Did he play it ok?
