Default Stars micro SNG - playing well, then blew it

Hi guys, have spent a bit of time lurking here and am looking forward to being part of this community

At the moment Im playing microstakes SNG's on stars and have built my bankroll up to $65 having started out with $10. I finish in the money fairly often but I also mess up quite often after having built up a good sized stack.

I played this quite aggressively, was stealing a lot and then things started going wrong around hand 26. Looking at my HH the last few hands make me cringe....I guess I though I could carry on trying to push around the other players at the table.

I would appreciate any criticism on my play

    ---Tournament Summary---
    $1.10 MTT: Finished 5/18 for $0
    Data for 78 hands.
    You played 32 hands (41.03%)
You raised 20 times preflop (25.64%)

Ok I only read the first few hands but I dont think you are playing as well as you think you are. Stop playing weak aces from early position. A7o with alot of people to act after you preflop is a bad starting hand thats going to get you into trouble more often than it wins you a decent sized pot.

The second hand you have JQ. What is your turn bet supposed to acomplish? Are you betting for value here or as a bluff. If for value, what worse hands are calling? If you are bluffing do you think they fold a K?.

The K8s hand you raise second in with 5 people to act behind you. Are you hoping they all fold or do you actually they you have the best hand?

Naked aggression with bad hands at stakes where the majority of players are calling stations is not the optimum.

The bet on the river was so weak that I was sure he hadnt hit a king. He checked to me on the turn so I bet to push him out of the pot.

I should have folded the K8s

Are you saying that I should be putting in a small bet to try and get more money out of the other player?

Is it not better to represent a strong hand here and try to avoid a showdown?
  6. #6
Ok I misread the hand and thought it was a rainbow flop. im going to rethink that hand

edit: actually my point still holds.

Is it not better to represent a strong hand here and try to avoid a showdown?
Which hands are you afraid of going to showdown against?

Which of those hands are folding to a turn bet?

At these stakes players could be holding any sort of trash or a decent hand - the range is huge.

If he has a king I want to try and force him out of the hand. He has already shown weakness on the river, but has called my bet so I want to get rid of him and take down the pot.

I am not sure why you posted this particular tournament as there are significantly more bad plays here than good plays.

You basically ran over the table till they got a read on you that you are raising and calling very light, then the good players sat back till they had good hands and proceeded to take your chips.

The below stats should immediately tell you that you are playing WAAAAAY too many hands.

    You played 32 hands (41.03%)
You raised 20 times preflop (25.64%)

There is no way you should have played 41% of the hands by level VII.
Poker is easy, it's winning at poker that's hard.

I feel your pain, be sure to check out my operation, Low Buy In Poker - Learning to win for some of the tips I've accumulated playing micro stakes, also the point about being in too many hands is accurate.

Try the 9-person/10-person SNGs for a while... the 18's draw more people with more experience due to higher. Also watch the stealing at low levels, doesn't work well as too many people are often in a pot.

let me look at some of your hands and offer my .02 though realize, I'm only about 6 months into this experiment and working to build up as well.

Hand 1, raise pre-flop, you have a lot of people in but I would thing 6xBB would cover it. You have a pretty good hand, play it. As played, don't mind the post flop raise, all in all not a bad hand, the AI move might have been too aggressive, but as you see you had a caller, he was crazy, I would have marked you for the queen with that betting pattern which beats him.

Hand 2 is ok, hand 3 is too early, I'm out of there with A-rag, too early to play it IMO

    Hand 4 fold pre-flop.
Hand 5 ok, though I think I'm checking the flop
    Hand 6 fold pre-flop
    Hand 7 standard
Hand 8 fold pre-flop, as played worked but a bit risky IMO
Hand 9 well... ok... guess I can't complain too bad about this one
Hand 10 standard, Hand 11, opening up a bit with hands, good...
Hand 12... I'm torn on this one, needed reads for me to decide.
    Hand 13/14 standard
Hand 15, understand your idea but I think I fold pre-flop
    Hand 16, fold preflop
Hand 17, wow heli_heli is lost on that hand... why was he calling?
On Hand 18, if Ipokermoney pushes post-flop, what was your plan?
Basically I'm seeing a lot of steals at the higher levels, good...
By hand 27, Budda Blizz is onto your steals and has caught you in a couple.
Hand 28, what were you calling with?
Hand 30, it's a coin flip I think but I think i fold it to his AI raise. But I understand your call.
I think I hold out a bit longer for a hand to shove on, Q7 doesn't cut it... I know you were getting low and your M was falling, but I think you hold on for a while longer...

Ok, so I'm no expert but there are my thoughts...

Hi Monty, thanks for your post. I have been following your operation and it has some good stuff.

    - I was keeping an eye on the no. of hands I was playing and things were at acceptable levels until I got on a bit of a roll with all the stealing. As noted, I did play a few hands that I should just have folded preflop.

-One of the key mistakes was not to realise that the other players had a read on me and to tighten up.

Playing microstakes, the trash that gets played a lot of the time is amazing. It makes it tricky to work out when someone actually has a decent hand rather than what they think is a decent hand. Sometimes this almost encourages you to put more value on marginal hands as your opponents could easily be playing with worse

Last night I had a great example of this. I had QQ and bet 4xBB from EP, got called by the button. (This is from memory so I apologize for not having the hand history handy). The stacks were about equal, with blinds around 25/50. So there is 400 + in the pot, lets see, that would be 475 in the pot pre-flop, both of us sitting on around 1000 chips left.

Flop comes Js 9d 3c... so no big threat. I bet in for 300, he calls.

Odd I thought, considering I haven't see him do much so far... really made me put on the brakes. I figured him for pocket 3s at that point or KK or AA.
Turn comes out exactly what I didn't want to see, Ad.

Not sure of my standing at this point I think for a while then check the card, he insta-shoves. What else could I put him on but a set or an Ace?

I fold, he takes it down and I type out... you really called that pre-flop with A-3? and he confirms it.

Sometimes amazes me what people will call or jump in with, pre-flop against a 4xBB raise, even from the button, early in a SNG I'm folding A-3o

Go to the SnG forum, open the sticky thread at the top called SnG Tactics Digest, read all the threads linked.

Also I recently posted a video 2-tabling $3.40s talking through basic strategy to beat microstakes sngs, give it a viewing and see how much it differs from how you played this.
Just dipping my toes back in.

Im opedipus bitch, the original balla.
I'll give it a quick read through and offer a little advice. Some of it may help, and some may be off. Deciphering the good from the bad is your job =). Anyways

First off early in a SNG you definately need to be playing a TAG style. Meaning you enter very few pots, but when you do you are betting/raising. There are times when you will make a play depending on position, reads, etc, but you really need to waiting on solid hands so that you have the better of it when getting in. The main reason being your stack size and your ability to sit back and wait for good hands because of that stack size. No need to push marginal hands in the beginning.

    -Hand 1-
I believe monty suggested raising this up to 6xbb preflop. I disagree for a few reasons. Yes you have a good hand and you might just have the best hand here preflop. However, a few factors lean me strongly towards a check rather than a raise. 1) People at this level like slowplaying big pairs (AA/KK) and you don't want to get reraised and have to throw the 8s away. (2) You already have 5 people in and you will most likely get a few calls from with a raise (which the raise will be pretty large given the amount of limpers) (3) Mid pairs are tricky to play in a multi way pot if the flop misses your set and overcards come (generally you have to slow down and throw it away) (4) no sense in risking too much of your stack here. (5) Also you are oop postflop if you get called.

I play it about the same way as you did, with the exception of the river. No since in shoving the river. Make a good sized value bet and hope for villian to shove over. Unless I had a read that villian is a total retard (might be the case) then you value bet, because generally he will fold to the shove and you have a very strong hand and want value.

    -Hand 2-
Fold preflop. No need to get involved without premiums at this level in the SNG.

    -Hand 3-
Fold preflop. Weak aces are horrible hands here. Large field and you are in MP with players left to act. Any competent player calling your raise should have you crushed.

    [9d Ac] BB (M=78.67; r+f+f+f+f+f+F)
Happy to see you folded this one. Just another weak ace.

    -Hand 4-
Fold. You have small suited connectors, so unless the flop smacks you in the face you probably aren't good. Plus steeler isn't deep enough to warrant a call chasing the straight or flush here.

    -Hand 5-
Not badly played. I raise to only about 100 preflop here, to keep pot small without a made hand. Why overbet pot on the flop? Not a good play there. You have nothing. You should bet flop, but not overbet. About 1/2-2/3 will suffice. Bet again on turn as played and be willing to call a shove (mainly because they play with crap like he showed down).

    -Hand 6-
Another fold preflop. Your playing way too loose for this level a of a SNG. Uhh as played, why would you fold to the reraise? it's only another 60 to see a pot of >450 or so. Great odds there.

    -Hand 8-
Fold here. Your UTG and with your stack and the blinds you have no reason to get involved without solid values. You could probably coast to ITM, so why risk it.

    -Hand 9-
I personally wouldn't even call preflop here. I know it's a weak min bet, but sometimes that means strength at these levels, and the hands he is raising should have you beat, and I wouldn't feel incredibly comfortable playing even if I hit top pair.

    -Hand 10-
Good action for AK I'd say. I'm not folding here, but I would have shoved over Daan to further deter steeler or ipoker from entering after you. If they reshove you have to call putting in that much already. Why not isolate so you have the best chance of winning.

    -Hand 11-
I Fold again. 6 players left at the table, and like I said with your stack you do not need to get involved without a hand or reason. You are also in bad position being UTG. A call and then you are oop postflop. Remember we play tighter the earlier our position and can loosen up when folded to us in later position.

    -Hand 12-
    Easy call.

    -Hand 13-
I make it 275 preflop and probably call a shove. If the blinds where 75/150 I would just push here and make him play for all his chips here to push max pressure on him.

    -Hand 15-
Fold again. You are way too loose here.

    -Hand 16-
I'd probably call the 50 here as well. Not real sure if we should or not. Not too fond of the flop lead, but once again I'm not sure of the correct play on this hand.

    -Hand 17-
Fold here again. Your stealing alot, and doing it at pretty bad times. You want to steal in late position when it's folded to you and the blinds are tight or weakness has been shown.

    -Hand 18-
Why call this? Your hand is horrible and ipoker doesn't have but like 800 more behind so you can expect a big bet somewhere in the hand. As played preflop (which should be a fold), I don't like the flop bet either. The board hit his range quite well, as he could be raising hands with an ace, jack, pocket pairs and with his small stack should be committing with a decent part of the board. And if he shoves over for another 500 are you going to call that? I wouldn't, so why bluff here?

That's really all I feel like going through right now. Your need to work on tightening up near the early stages of the sng. And remember that stealing is meant for late position against tight players left to act. I suggest maybe playing a few STT and posting those in the SNG forum for review when you get a chance. I'd be happy to read through those as well.

    Good luck.
