Usually. Hitting flops is something I would rather my opponents try to do.

I think that's called a "Continuation Bet"

I do it all the time. I'd say it works about 60 percent of the time.

What if you're playing with the same group of guys on a regular basis, and they expect you to do it? It works to my advantage when I'm last to act; I frequently get to see a free card if I like...but is it chip-efficient to keep doing it?

To me, missing doesn't matter. I'm not trying to go to showdown anyway.

Bet here if you're heads up, the flop looks pretty harmless with minimal draws out there. I'd bet whether in our out of position about two-thirds of the pot, maybe a little less because there are no draws out there. If it's a multi way pot of only two other players I'd bet if it was checked to me. If I'm first to act post-flop I'll either make a smallish bet or check/fold.

If they are expecting a continuation bet and you are first to act - checkraise.

I have to add this in on a side note:

I don't remember who it was on FTR that suggested to try this, but it has worked 8/9 times thus far.

Isolate heads up against one player. check raise min the flop. bet pot size on turn.

Harrington on NL Holdem Tournaments Vol 1 covers this very well under "Continuation bets"

It certainly doesn't always work, nor does it have to - but it DOES have to work out "in the long run".

That Harrington book is excellent, that's just one thing he covers very well. Even if you're not playing tournaments, most of the info still applies.

Oh, and yes, it is WAY helpful to be last to act for this to work. And it IS hardest the more people in the pot.

And it's a horrible play against calling machines!

For the same people all the time (your friends), you are really going to have to vary whether you do it or not to keep them confused.
