Can we really trust online poker?

I was playing an SnG this morning and one of the users took a bad beat and made a comment that interested me. He said something to the effect that the software of the site rewarded foolish play. Now not that I agree with that particular assessment, but it got me thinking, can we actually be sure that these sites are trustworthy, and is there any way of verifying.
