Do you ever sattellite yourself into a bigger game?

I did this for the first time today, I decided if I win this $5 SnG I'll use that to buy into a bigger game. So I won a $5 SnG ($25 total) and then bought into a $20 where i got 2nd place ($60 total). I think this is a bankroll-friendly way to change it up a litte bite...

does anyone else do this?

I've done it with heads up matches (going up to $100 HU matches and staying there until I lose one)... you're right its a fun way to risk little of your bankroll for bigger rewards, and change things up

I likethe idea of doing this with a $5 SnG better than HU matches.
Playing HU is like a coinflip weighted just a little in favor of the better player regardless of their skill.
I would be surprised if any pro could win 75% of HU matches against a player with a mediocre skill set.

Roy Jones wrote a cardplayer column on something similar to this.

He was saying if you had maybe $400 for $1-2 or lower limits, you should keep a seperate $100 "buyin" for $3-6 limit maybe. And if you bust out, you rebuild, but there's a chance you can double or triple that buy-in with a good run of cards.


Of course, this is more logical in the real world where you have cash bankrolls, but online it just takes a bit more discipline.

I'll do this, but I'm a bit more conservative. You're stepping up 4x the original entry fee, so basically it's a doule or nothing strategy. For example, you win a 5+.50 and now have $25($19.50 of which is profit). You then enter a $20 and either win(+$97.50 profit), place(+$57.50), show(+37.50), or OOTM(-$2.50). Too much risk. You can build BR quickly that way, but also lose your hard earned winnings quickly.

If you're going to do this, why not just move up one level with a win(say $5 to $10), or maybe two levels if you've been 1st or 2nd several times in a row. That way you're not risking all of your winnings in one shot. Works for me anyway. You're also playing closer to the same type of game just moving 1 level vs. 2 or more.

Party already has something akin to this. Their steps tourneys. If you like this idea, you might just wanna try doing that instead.
