do you have to show your cards in an allin bet. see below

I know on the online games of no limit holdem they show the cards, but one of my friends said that it is a COURTESY to show the cards. example

Before the flop, player 1 goes allin, player 3 calls the allin

player 1 shows his cards, player 3 does not want to shows his cards till the river. Is this true?

In a cash game you do not have to show your cards unless you are taking down the pot or you are the one who bet all in. Online sites like Party Poker does not make you show your hand if you call an all in and lose (although you can find the hand in the hand history). I believe that in a cash game if someone calls your all in you have the right to ask to ask to see their hand, although I think that is poor ettiquette. Other sites like Full Tilt do show hands that are all in. Personally I like to show hands but its not always mandatory. In a tournament structure, when players are all in they both turn their cards over.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the rule from 'Roberts Rules' is that the last player who took aggresive action (betting, raising), must show his hand first at a showdown. Any players calling a bet have the right to muck.

Courtesy, however, may dictate otherwise.
