One Pair split pot??

This came up at our weekly poker game last night and led to a 1 hour argument that was never resolved. Player A had J-2, Player B had J-3
the board was A J 9 4 5. Is this a split pot because both players kickers were lower than the lowest card on the board. Any links to prove this would be great thank you.

PS no flush whatsoever.

Split pot.


Basic rule of hold'em: The BEST FIVE CARDS play. The best five cards for both players are JJA95. No other cards play in either hand.

That's a simple rule. You don't need a link to prove it.

Thanks the guy hosting the game looked it up in a book and online for 45 min and wouldnt let it go. had a similar situation later with a flush Jh3 again vs 10 2h board had 4 hearts K 10 7 5 but everyone seemed to agree that was a split pot.

Again, the same basic rule applies in this second example. The best five cards play.

In this case, the heart-flush of KJT75 is better than KT752. This is NOT a split pot. The player with the Jack of hearts should have won the pot.


In any showdown situation, simply look for the best 5 cards.

The only way you get a split with a flush is if the board has a flush and noone has a higher suited card in their hand.

If I read your example correctly:

Player A:
:jh: :3c:

Player B:
:tc: :2h:

Board:
:kh: :th: :7h: :5h: :8c:

Then player A's hand is
:kh: :jh: :th: :7h: :5h:

And Player B's hand is
:kh: :th: :7h: :5h: :2h:

Player A will win it because he has the higher (better) flush.

You MUST play the best 5 cards you can.
