Default Will Hold'em For Advanced Players help with me No Limit game

I bought Hold'em For Advanced Players by Sklansky. I thought the book would deal with all limits of Hold'em, esp. NL, however they say in the beginning of the book it is mainly for limit games, more spec. medium limit to high(er) limit. I'm thinking that it will help my game regardless, as I play low limit (am working my way up) this should definately be better than no information at all. However, I was wondering how the strategies of these limit (higher limit) games can transcend over to NL. I'm guessing that if you know how to apply these strategies you can make them work for any form of Hold'em. I could really use some clarity. Thanks a lot.

They most certainly do. I have theory of poker which is also mostly a limit game but all of the concepts can be applied to No Limit. Poker is poker and the concepts you learn from one type will help you in all other poker games. They wont apply quite as much in some types as others but they will certainly help your understanding of the game.

I read the book and I guess that you can get some tips from it to help your NL game but for example ToP is much much more useful to your NL game than HEFAP. At least you noticed that the book is for limit, I borrowed it from a friend, he and another friend didnt even notice that is was a limit book :P

There is a problem with HPFAP if you are playing lower stakes. While the book in itself is very good, it is specifically aimed to help you do well at the higher LIMIT games. While a strong player will still win against weaker ones, he wont play optimal if he plays the same game against weak players as he does strong players. For low stakes limit play Small Stakes Holdem does the job ALOT better. For a low stakes No Limit player there isnt the same amount of quality work available... Mastering No Limit Holdem is an okay book for NL beginners. For the (litte more) advanced player Harringon on Holdem is an absolute must read, even if its aimed at tournaments many of the advice apply to cash games as well.

This is one of the things i like about HPFAP. It doesnt tell you to play a certain style and it doesnt tell you to raise AQ by a certain amount from each position. What it does tell you is what to consider before each and every decision and that is something that i believe will help you, whether you play holdem or stud or draw, limit or no limit or whatever.

Discussing descisions is what HPFAP is all about and it really is a great book for it. If you are on a limited poker book budget then send it back and get a more NL oriented book. If you can afford the extra $15 or whatever it is then keep it and read it over and over again.

Edit: Somehow I read that as "The Theory of Poker" when i was drunk. Now that is a great book... I havnt actually got around to reading HPFAP yet so ignore everything i said or buy Theory of Poker. I guess I'll leave this reply hanging around for comedy value

if your playing NL at lower limits get small stakes Holdem, it is far better.
Ive just completed sklansky's ADvanced book and while it has helped me to totally revamp my limit game, there are only *some* elements that are good for NL, and if you need to learn those techniques then i suggest other books instead.
