The States taxes poker too afaik, or at least you're supposed to declare it - I mean it's a form of income and in the states you even pay tax on f lotto. Don't really wanna get into a tax debate, but you've made me curious about why it seems illogical to you.

I've no idea about how the detail works in the countries that tax, but surely this is a zero-sum game between players and providers? Assuming all players and providers pay the same tax rate and all claim their losses and pay their dues, there would be no net tax revenue but a pain in the ass with administration. If anything, there may be a tax loss to the state depending on the non-poker income of the winners and losers.

This also assumes that the tax rate would be the same in all transactions. The tax rate generally depends on whether it applies to a company or an individual, total annual income of said entity, plus a bunch of other crap.

When the government actually passes regulatory legislation, it will include a method of getting tax monies out of everyone involved.
