theoretical question 3b ranges

wanted to make an elaborate post with questions about this topic but just found all my answers elsewhere

I always thought Merged and Depolarized were the same thing. In any case, you want to be 3betting people who call a lot with a wide range of value hands - if they call 3bets with 99, then you can 3bet with TT for value, or KJ etc.

If they fold a lot to 3bets, you want to be 3betting them with a polarized range of nut hands and junk - so you can still 3bet AA/KK for value for example, but you really don't want to 3bet say JJ against them, because they will fold a lot and you'll get no value for your pretty strong hand, and because when they do call you'll be way behind their tight calling range. However, you can 3bet them with 57o because they fold a ton - when you're called, it's easy to shut down and be done with the hand, wheras if they called you and you held JJ and had an overpair, it's easy to end up putting more money in the pot when you're behind. If they have a tight calling range, you are mostly 3betting them with junk as a bluff, but when they do call and you continue the hand beyond the flop, you show up with the nuts more often than the 2nd best "good" hand.

I've been doing a pretty detailed SB review, and I have come across a couple hands where I 3b' w/ ATo in the Sb. They were mostly from about back two weeks ago and before I tightened up my pre-fl' range. I've done it recently to once.

See my call pfr was a bit to high, and so my thought was vs. a LP opener besides the nittiest, we are pretty far ahead of a standard range that is bloated in LP.

But, the draw back is getting called, we're OOP, and now probaly have to let it go v.s most opp's narrowed range.

So, Is ATo worth the trouble in the sb? Worth a flat?

The only possible answer is "it depends". Against someone who calls a lot of 3bets with worse you can 3bet it, against someone who opens a lot worse but folds to 3bets a lot you can call with it.

You've also got to consider the BB and their tendencies, will they cold call IP then station you down with a small pocket pair when you don't improve? Will they 4bet squeeze? Will they fold dominated hands to a 3bet that they would otherwise have called with?

There's a lot of variables - in general, I'd advise being quite tight from the SB because you're in the worst possible position, but ATo is often going to be on the borderline of hands you might call with, so you've really got to weigh up the various factors.

In general ATo is at the top of my bluffing range in a polarized 3betting strategy (too nitty even for full ring?) from the blinds. but it really comes down to villain's range. As Boris mentioned, depending on how your opponent plays both flatting and 3betting are options.

Right, it's also at the top of my bluffing range. In the review I'm doing I've showed much better profit 3b'ing ATo in Sb, than flatting it. At 4nl the BB is rarely waking up and 4b'ing me.

It just seemed kinda marginal, and being a greenback I just wanted to get some opinions on it.. Thanks
