Putting Opponents On a Range~~

When putting my opponents a a range I know I'm watching my opp's pre-flop tendencies & what their showing it don with, but how long or how many hands into play until I putting them on a concrete range. Cawho knows, theycould be running good or Tilting when I first get in.....

concrete? This is a game of incomplete information, you just get more confident in your reads and your ranges, but rarely should that confidence ever be 100%.

Let's say we have 1k hands on a villain who's 10/8 at a FR table, totally straightforward postflop, raises UTG, and fires flop & turn on a Qc2s5d7c board. You should be weighing their range strongly towards {QQ, KK, AA} of course, but maybe they have AKcc and picked up a FD on the turn, maybe they're opening up their game and opened with 77, or even 55, maybe they've decided to spazz out with some random AK, maybe they have AQs. All of those maybes should be given some %, in this case probably a fairly low %.

My point is that confidence isn't an on or off thing, it's just something that you have to weigh given the information at hand, and that comes with experience. One common mistake beginners make is reading into small-sample stats too much or too little. There's no magic formula I can give you, but one important fact is that loose players will reveal their tendencies much faster than tight players simply because they're involved in pots so much more frequently. 5 hands on a really loose player can give you a rough, general, weak read that they're a fish, but 5 hands on a tight player usually can only tell you that they're probably not a super-loose fish, but they still might be a fish.

I'm just getting back into the game. I definitely feel you on the imperfect sceince of reading opp's, but its like man, when you read books & articles ya see these people calling ranges , and it reads so confident that ya think there must be some formula....

No, but I got ya. Just keep playing , keep asking questions, and keep playing...

Right now I can honestly say I'm playing weak-tight, but on my way to TAG. i'm working on calling more 3bets in position & even 4betting when the spot is right. Which is seeming crucial to winning play.....

In addition to what d0zer mentioned, you need to practice linking a VPIP/PFR stat to an actual range.

Most everyone would rank AA, KK, QQ in the top 5 hands, but what comes next? Would you rather add JJ, TT, or do you prefer AKs, AKo? Different people will answer that question differently, so there is not even a concrete range for the top 5 hands.
A range is not a static thing. A certain % does not link to an exact range, but it's usually pretty close.

Edit: pay attention to HH's and see what villains show at showdown. This tells you if they over-value weak PP or undervalue suited Ax and Kx. This is great for finding the edges of a specific villains range.
