Totally understand what you're saying about not knowing who to listen to, who's right, who's wrong, etc. But you should never take anyone's opinion on a poker forum as fact anyway. There's too many variables. That's why there's always more than 1 reply to a hand. Anyway, do your own investigating and experimenting from the replies here to see what works for you. No one will give you a cookie cutter answer because there's no real cookie cutter questions. Try to learn the "why" instead of looking for the "how" and you'll be fine. GL.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. The deciding factor in any poker situation is EV. Basically it goes like this:

I'm going to make up some numbers to illustrate a point.

    Let's say I'm break-even at 5NL with a winrate of 1 bb/100.
If I buy a book or software or spend money to join a training site, then that costs money. Let's say $50.
Assume my skill improves dramatically, so that now I'm winning 3 bb/100.
    So the difference (the amount that I can attribute to the purchase) is ( 3 bb/100 - 1 bb/100 = ) 2 bb/100.
At 5NL, 1 bb is $0.05. So that means I need to win ( $50 / $0.05 = ) 1000 bb's above and beyond what I would have won anyway to break even with 0 EV on my purchase.
With a difference in winrate as 2 bb/100 hands, that means the purchase will pay for itself after ( 1,000 bb / 2 bb/100 hands = ) 50,000 hands.

The thing is, now I have to consider that I would have improved (at least a little) over that 50,000 hands, even without the purchase... so that 50,000 is too small.

OK, so this long illustration is to show you that when you're playing the micro-stakes, you're getting far more EV from personal study and dialogue with friends and like-minded people than you are from a book or software.

Once you have improved as a player to be playing higher blinds, then the number of hands you have to play to make the purchase 0EV is much fewer.

Of course, you might not care about any of this... but ultimately, you will realize that every poker decision should be based on EV.
