This afternoon at a little after 1.00 pm GMT I broke the 1K bankroll barrier.
Its been a long journey. I played my first game of texas holdem almost exactly a year ago, for play money plastic chips sat on the floor of our living room with 2 uni mates. I sucked badly but it seemed like fun so I signed up for an account at Empire poker and started playing their play money SnGs. I watched a bit of poker night live and learnt not to play A2o and it wasnt long bebfore I was crushing them.
I made my first money deposit towards the end of July 2005. Playing for real money excited me and terrified me at the same time. It was way more fun than pretend money but I still sucked hard. I managed to lose my first $50 deposit on Empire poker in a matter of days after building up to the dizzying heights of $120 playing a mixture of 25NL and the $5 and $10 SnGs and pulling the biggest and most outrageous bluffs I could think of. Although not exactly succesful, my first adventure into poker got me hooked and I started reading around on the internet for anything that might help my game.
I found FTR around August and after reading for a few weeks I decided to give online poker another go. I had read about bankroll managment and decided I would never bust again so I headed over to pokerstars and put another $50 in, this time playing the 5NL cash games. I managed to grind my way slowly down to around $30 before realising that I still hadnt got the hang of tight preflop play. I decided to just play the top 19 hands and all of a sudden I was winnning. It was slow at first, winning $2 at a time then losing $1.50 but after a while I began to just *know* when I was beaten. I played the weakest-tightest game youll find at 5NL and folded my way back up to $50. After a while I began to add tables and a few more preflop hands and everything just seemed to start comming together. At this time I was also posting probably 5+ hands a day for Fnord to rip to pieces. Ive probably posted more hands at 5NL than at any other stake and that was really what pulled my game together.
Eventually I built my BR up to $200 and decided to move up to 10NL at stars. It went disasterously. I was so sure everyone at this high a stake must be a pro so I went back to bluffing and calling huge "bluffs". It actually took me 3 attempts to move up to 10NL but I kept at it and eventually I made it.
Ever since moving up to 10nL I havnt looked back. I hit some really nasty varience on the move up to 25NL but I was pretty sure my play was solid so I got through it after dropping around $100 in less than a week. Now Im sitting at 1K Ive started playing a little 50NL when there arent enough full 25NL tables, Ive just finished my exams and everythings just dandy.
I just hope I can put as much back into this great site as Ive got out of it.
THANKYOU FTR![]()
