Despite what some people have convinced themselves of, Poker is gambling.
Yes, the good players use their skill/knowledge of the game to reduce the gamble by playing when they are the favorite to win, but luck matters. I once heard T.J Cloutier say that there has never been a champion that didn't have a little luck on his side.
Believe me, I have had my share of bad luck, especially online. But once I realized that I cannot influence what cards are dealt, I understood that a 'long term' outlook is necessary to win at this game.
As far as online versus live games. I also play both, but I also do much better at live games.
Are the cards better live? Not really.
I played in a 12 player live tournmament two weeks ago. The best hole cards I was dealt all night was pocket 9. I hit a set on the flop with a suited/connected board, but I had to fold on the turn. The winner held a Straight Flush- what are the odds on that hand? 1:81000. Talk about bad luck.
Are players better online? No.
I can only speak for the group of regulars I play live games with, but they are diverse group of mostly strong players, including several 50+ year olds that have spent years in casinos.
So what is the difference in luck online versus live?
Probably just your perception of it. Remember, that the odds of hitting any pair are something like 1:2.5 against (don't quote me on that), so i'm not surprised that that you have been missing the last few times online. Luck matters. Chalk it up to negative variance and stick to your game.
