If you bet yor draws it's harder for your opponents to know you're on a draw as oppossed to when you simply check and call. Subsequent betting once you hit your draw is more likely to get paid off then, at least in my experience. Your semi-bluffs may also take down the pot right there negating the need for you to actually hit your draw.
