Default i need help im a loser.....

I am starting out and play a lot online. I feel too intimidated playing real games right now. I played like twice with real people. I want to know if you guys have a site that can show me the ropes and also if there is a site that can help me calculate when the cards are in my favor or not.

Ohhh man you're at the site!

Theres so much good reading on the flopturnriver.com front page just to begin with, lots of great posts here in the forums and many people to help.

Play at the microlimits of course until you get the hang of the game, and buy a couple books.

    I suggest:
Winning low limit holdem by lee jones
    small stakes holdem by sklanksy
read those first - they give you the basics

    then id highly reccommend
supersystem 1 or 2 by brunson
    theory of poker by sklanksy

there are many other great books people will reccomend here as well so keep your eyes open.

Also, when you decide to play for real money, make sure you learn all about the word "bonuswhoring"

You're well on your way to improving.

    1) You've admitted you suck. You'd be amazed how many people think they're the shit when really all they are is shit itself.
    2) You've come here. Lots of knowledgable posters who can help out your game and lots of good info on the front page of the site. Just reading through the forums you'll learn a lot.

    Welcome!
Light years ahead of the competition.

Yeah i really want to learn this game but its hard playing online with "free money" because to me seems like people don’t play right. Well i thought i was the s*** till i entered a few rooms with like 2000 and walked out with like 800 !! haha I know its a game that takes time but some of us newbies at work want to get our personal tournaments going and i want to come out on top ! I am going to read till my eyes bleed and play till my fingers lock

it just seems that i really dont know the odds yet and i am trying to learn. I mean i get delt a Ad Kd and im thinking i go this is the bag only to lose to a trip for flush. I just try and see the flop and make the best hand from the flop with cards i dont have(other players cards) and i am beating MYSELF. I am trying to guess what my other player could have and i seem to scare myself off a lot.

    p.s

Calvin and hobbes ... such a good call ! i love them guys

I'd read this site, its a pretty good site for beginners, it has some pretty valuable information and will get you thinking the right things about poker.

    www.learn-texas-holdem.com

Its also how i got linked to this site, so don't say its spam or whatever.

Read, read, read ,read, read. You make it sound like you're pretty lost right now. Pick up the TJ Cloutier book.
"Championship no-limit and pot-limit hold'em: On the road to the World Series of Poker" Or some otehr book. That book teaches you a nice straight-forward approach to get adjusted to the flow of the game. It sounds like you need that.

When I read the title of this thread why did I assume Gabe was the author?
TheXianti: (Triptanes) why are you not a thinking person?

this is definitely the place to be. look around, read about stuff that's going on. get familiar with starting hands, general preflop what to do and what not to do. Most preflop stuff, when to fold, call, bet, raise, is somewhat textbook especially in the beginning. learning what to do preflop is about 80% of the battle when you're a beginner.
i betcha that i got something you ain't got, that's called courage, it don't come from no liquor bottle, it ain't scotch

I'm puzzled as to why that looks like plain english to me.

Biggest peice of advice I can give is don't get discouraged, people go through peaks and valleys playing poker.

Keep playing, gain experience. That's the only way to get better. And no, play money tables are not worth anything to your experience. That is not poker at all. Poker is all about caring whether you lose or not. Once you take that away it's not poker anymore.
It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.

Coming from live games first, one piece of advice I can give is to just watch other people. Online you can get distracted by other tables or a video clip of something, but live you don't have those things around. Watch your opponents and try to understand why they do what they do.

nice selection but you left out dan harrington on holdem... by far the best tournament/no limit book around.

back to the original poster .. i started out, took me 3 months reading this site and 5 books later to become a winning player, and im still a beginner, hope to be as good as some of the people at this site soon.

Same here. 3 months of FTR is the path to righteous victory in on-line poker (better than any book, imo, but books are important). I'm still new, still making mistakes, still gettin' better. But I have turned the corner and my bankroll is now out of the red and climbing slowly.

My other advice: Read some under "Online Poker Rooms" and take advantage of the bonuses that sites offer from day one. This will give your bankroll a little juice while you're learning and potentially losing.
