Default Avoiding the blow to my BR

So I have been trying to build up my BR by following the tips and strategies on this site and they have been working really well but I still run into this problem where I will be up about $4 to $8 dollars for the day and then I will lose like a whole buy-in in one hand when i have an overpair and run into a set or something along that line. I always manage to grind back up to even. It just seems like this is a reoccuring thing that happens at least once a day. So I thought since there are a lot of people on this site with a lot of experience, they might be able to help me out here. It hasn't been a problem of having to deposit more money but I want to be able to build my BR, so any advice would be awesome! Thanks guys

There is an article about this in the digest. How people play there sets, and when you can fold your overpair.

Im opedipus bitch, the original balla.
Main thing is to quit focusing on whether you are winning poker each session or not. Instead, make sure you are playing you hands correctly. Just because you are up 1 buyin and losing a hand will put you to breakeven on the session, doesn't determine how you should play your hand. If you are correct to get the money in, and that isn't based on the results of the hand, but on villains range, you hand, etc, then whether you lose or win this time, you will make money in the long run.

So instead of looking back and saying "if I wouldn't have lost this hand, I would be up x buyins for the session". Instead, look back at all of your hands, and see if you played them all correctly. The ones you didn't find out what is wrong with them, and fix it.

Yeah, I get so obsessed and concerned with building my BR up that sometimes lose patience and am always lookin for that monster hand that is going to dbl my buy in, when I just need to play solid poker and in time everything will fall in place.

Sounds like you're playing scared money and should drop down to a different stake. Losing $4 or losing $8 or even losing $40 shouldnt be an issue at all if you are playing within your bankroll and a stake you arent scared to play at. iirc, you play 20nl so id suggest dropping down.

I'm currently experiencing the same thing. Where I'd be doing great, building up my br slowly. ( I deposited $200 and i'm playing $10nl, gonna move up when I have 25 buyins ) then I'd get hit either by a bad beat, or things like flopping an under set, having an overpair against a set, etc.
Im trying to just play through it but it is starting to get on my nerves. It's not the money, but I just feel like i'm not really getting anywhere, and my br is never going to build up high enough to jump to the next level.
Is there any advice on what I should do? Should I multitable more? Right now i'm playing 2 tables.

If you're playing FR, you should be able to handle 4 tables if you're not a complete noob.

To the OP, that's NL baby. You can grind all day for +1 BI, win it one hand or lose it on another. That shit is gonna happen whether you like it or not and the more hands you play, the more you'll see it happen. I bet there's a ton of things you could be doing that could increase your win rate overnight, that can help you overcome the variance of coolers and bad beats. One being good BRM, obviously. Attempt to steal more. Be willing to gamble with fish and short-stacks. Tighten up in early position (like don't play AJ, KQ type hands from EP). Don't limp, etc, etc, etc.

Son of bitch shit, I just played 1k hands already and I had about 10 hands where I could have been up 10 BIs. Guess what? Split pot on every flippin one of them. Ok... I had to rant too.

And WTF is up with the avatars!!! I feel naked dogammit.

when playing 4 or more tables, wouldn't it be hard to take good notes? Right now, i'm taking notes on any hands with a decent sized pot and what cards people play in different positions etc.
Wouldn't it be harder to do with 4+ tables because you can't see all the actions at the same time? Do you just rely on stats for those decisions???

How can you not see all the action at the same time on 4 tables? Are you on a 13" monitor?!

There are people who play well over 4 tables and still take notes. I can't play anything less than 4 tables or I start surfing FTR, porn, whatever. It's up to you though. You should be taking notes on "how" they play those hands, not just from what position (you can tell that from HUD stats anyway). This is where putting players on ranges starts.

Do you tile the tables??? It fits fine without hud, but with hud, and when i tile the tables, it doesn't fit. All the stats overlap each other. And i'm on a 15inch monitor btw.
And I do take notes of how they play, not just what they play, just didn't word it very well.

How many stats do you use on the HUD? I just have the usual VPIP/PFR/AF/Hands with everything else in the popup. And yes, I tile the tables up to 9. Any more than that I'd have to cascade them, which I don't like and I can't play more than 9 tables anyway.

Ya, I think that might be a good solution, I use about 9 or 10 stats.
    I use VPIP/PFR/Call PFR/ 3 bet / call 3bet/ AF/ Flop % / C bet %/ F cbet %
I know its a lot, but i never really have to open the popup, everything is just there on the table.

I'd stick with your note taking - but wouldn't go as far to take notes on every hand - just ones where villain does something unexpected, or takes an unusual line. No point noting every attempt to steal, but if someone looks him up and you get to see his range from the button etc - that could be useful..

All I can suggest is working slowly up the table count.. I've got a 17" lappy screen and I'm really not comfortable with more than 4 tables at a time (crappy 1440x900 resolution) and I usually don't add the 3rd or 4th until I'm comfortable with knowing who the regs are, who the fish are etc in most positions on the first 2 tables.

I also find using the Auto-rebuy feature quite useful - it means I don't have to see how much I'm down while I'm actually playing. I'm still too results oriented and often check if I'm up or down a buy in overall, but I'm sure I'll get past that once I'm more experienced at this limit and don't care that losing one buy in now is the equivalent to losing 2 buy ins at the tables I was playing a week ago..
