Default 2nl Short Stack Shove, Unknown Villain

    Poker Stars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.02 BB (4 handed) - Poker Stars

    SB ($0.84)
    BB ($4.72)
    UTG ($2.68)
    Hero (Button) ($2.21)

    Preflop: Hero is Button with
    A K

    UTG bets $0.06
    Hero raises $0.18
    SB raises $0.83 (All-In)
    UTG folds
    Hero?

    Pot = $1.10, Call = $0.66

Villain is an absolute unknown, this is the second hand he has played on the table, he folded from the BB.

I worked out that I need 37.5% equity for my call to be a profitable one, however I don't understand how we put villain on a range.

I'm fairly sure this is a pretty obvious call as villain is 42BB deep and a range of TT+ is just 0.5% below giving me enough equity to call and I'd assume that there would be the odd worse PP he'd shove and some Ax type hands. (This correct?)

However at what point (if not already, if I have gone wrong somewhere) does calling this shove become unprofitable?

    Assuming Villain is ~50BB deep.

I suppose my question is what is a decent range to put a short stack unknown villain on when 4bet shoving?

Start by giving him the strongest range you think he can possibly have if you're not sure. I'd say that's QQ+ & AK. Then run a simulation and see what it says.

Pokerstove says 38.8% equity. You're calling 65 cents to win $1.74 so you need ~37.3% equity so even if he only shoves those hands it's profitable.

It depends on the site, but on Bovada, at 10NL and 5NL, you can safely fold here. Not enough people 4-bet at all, and the ones who do, either do it waaaay too much, or only with KK+.

If they are doing it too much, then you are going to have plenty of chances to exploit them, and soon.

If they only do it with KK+, then you exploit them right now by folding.

Can you support this assertion with anything more substantial than small sample anecdote?

I've played more than 70k hands on Bovada, and I frequently look at the HH to see what people had when they made a big move pre-flop.

3-bets are pretty rare on the FR tables, so 4-bets stick out like a sore thumb (do people still say that?).

I can't say how many 4-bet hands I've checked out, but it's probably less than 100, so still small sample.

As far as comparing to other sites, I have heard from other people who play on other sites that what I'm describing on Bovada is not their experience on their site. The Bovada anonymous system alters the game play enough, I guess.

This is generally true at the microstakes, regardless of site.

this is a very very easy call in my opinion. i'd estimate this shortie's range to be something like 99+,AK and maybe some AQ. some of those hands he probably thinks are winners (QQ+), and the rest he likely shoves because he has absolutely no idea what to do on a lot of different flops and so gets the fear and shoves. as has been mentioned, even if villain's range is QQ+,AK (which would be the absolute tightest range i could put him on), it is still going to be +EV call

At 2nl I call this all day long unless I have stats telling me that he is a very tight short stacker.

Thanks for the help, hadn't thought of putting him on his tightest possible range and seeing if it was +EV.

    Easy call in my opinion.
